2004 “Sun Ray” Cabernet Sauvignon:  Texas’ Newsom Vineyards grew the grapes, which our winemakers carefully nurtured to make this fine wine.  More than 2 years in American and French Oak barrels have helped develop its character.

After a vigorous swirl aromas of black currant, ripe red fruit, and subtle oak rise to the nose.  These carry over to the palate where one notes a full body and big velvety tannins.  Good aging potential.
This classic cabernet is ready to drink and will pair well with red meat, game and Italian dishes.   300 cases
Gold Medal: 2008 Lone Star International Competition
Bronze Medals:  2009 Houston Livestock Show Wine Competition and 2008 Women in Wine Competition

$26.95

2004 “Moon Glow” Merlot:  Neal Newsom harvested the grapes at night near Plains, Texas, and after more than 2 years in American and French Oak barrels Moon Glow Merlot is ready to drink.
Bing cherries and a hint of vanilla on the nose give way to cherries, ripe red fruit, good acid, some oak on the palate and a long clean finish.  Medium body and tannins.
Allow this wine to breath before serving with port, lamb, stews and lighter beef dishes.   280 Cases
Gold Medal:  2009 Houston Livestock Show Wine Competition, and Texas Class Champion
Bronze Medals: 2008 Dallas Morning News Competition and 2008 Lone Star International Competition

$19.95

2005 “Twilight Tango” Malbec: This is the second vintage from the two acres of Malbec that Neal Newsom planted for us.  “Twilight Tango” reflects our love of the Malbec grape and the Tango, both made famous by the Argentines.
Our 2005 Twilight Tango was aged for nearly 3 years in small French Oak Barrels. The nose presents vanilla, black fruit and a hint of tobacco. Soft tannins, full body, medium acitidy and a long velvety finish characterize this big wine -- ready to drink, but in will age well.
Pair with beef, duck, buffalo, elk or venison.
335 cases.
Gold Medal Trophy: 2009 Grapefest People's Choice Competition

$26.95

2004 Proprietor's Reserve: As our 2004 red wines aged in oak barrels, they required constant care. Monthly we top the barrels, to exclude air that results from the "Angel's Share" [evaporation] and we adjust the sulfite levels to inhibit spoilage. Quarterly we remove the wine from the barrels, wash the barrels and refill them. During this racking process we taste the wine from each barrel. Over the 2 years that we did this, we found that one barrel each of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Merlot had especially fine flavor. Those three barrels have married well to produce this bold red blend.
70 cases.
Silver Medals:  2009 Lone Star International Competition and 2008 Women in Wine Competition

$39.95

2008 Pinot Gris: Neal and Janice Newsom grew the grapes near Plains, Texas. We call the grape variety by its French name, Pinot Gris, because it reminds us of a French wine. As you swirl, sniff and sip this golden wine you will encounter a flinty minerality, with tropical fruit, kiwi, and a hint of apricot on the nose. The full body has a voluptuous buttery richness that lingers on your palate. Pairs well with shellfish, salmon and delicate Dover sole, as well as chicken or veal dishes. Serve chilled.
185 cases.

“Mommy, come see, Pink Rainbows,” called our 2-year old granddaughter.   “I’m busy fixing dinner” came the reply.   The little redhead responded excitedly and insisted, “No Mommy come now, Pink Rainbows!” And, for the first time, our daughter realized she could enjoy sunsets from her living room window.
This light refreshing wine’s sweetness makes it an excellent choice to accompany all spicy foods such as Asian, Barbeque, Cajun, Mexican or Tex-Mex.    Chilled it’s a great “Summer Sippin’ Wine.”
Bronze Medals: 2006 Taste of Taos, 2006 Grapefest Peoples Choice and 2007 Grapefest Peoples Choice

$13.95

Winemakers, Birgit and Bruce Anderson are delighted to introduce our first “Vintner’s Select” wine made from Orange Muscat grapes from Newsom Vineyards in Plains, Texas.    Only 255 cases of 2005 Vintners’ Select Orange Muscat were produced.
Sweet-tart aromas of tangelo, honey and a hint of beeswax greet you as you approach this wine.   These sensations carry through to the palate and the flavor of nectarine blends into the sensual symphony.  This delicate and refreshing wine will compliment a fruit or almond tart, and chocolate desserts such as cake, mousse, or ice cream.
Silver Medal: 2009 Lone Star International Competition

$18.95

One November day, long ago, in Burleson, Texas a Rotarian named Richard Duke decided to grow his beard.   His fellow Rotary Club members thought he looked like a legendary elf, so they bought him a red suit – and when he put it on Richard became the real Santa Claus.
For many years he visited parties and was given toys to donate to Harvest House, an organization that passed them along to children who otherwise would have faced a bleak Christmas.
We are pleased to offer this sweet red wine in honor of our friend Richard, “Santa Claus” Duke. Each year we use a different picture of him on the label.
We have crafted 30 cases of our 2010 Santa’s Special wine from Lenoir grapes grown in our Burleson, Texas vineyard.  We believe Santa would like it. We know he’d be pleased that a portion of the purchase price will go to Harvest House. Available only at the winery.

*This “Our Wines” page does not include wines that we sell that do not carry our label.  We also stock several wines that we have selected from other Texas wineries, including a sparkling wine made by the traditional method used in Champagne, France, and a sweet red wine, and may add others to meet the needs/desires of our local customers.   We encourage you to visit our web-site, and especially this page often.  On this page you will discover new releases, and learn about closeout specials of old friends that are soon to be replaced by newer vintages.  While you are here, take a moment to explore other pages to learn about gift shop items, event schedules, and other new developments.   Sunset Winery, like this website, is “a work in progress” and we are delighted that you have chosen to visit us.  Y’all come back and share in our growth and progress!
